Become a Board Member! by Carlos Chavez

Morpheus Youth Project (MYP) is currently looking for community members to join their board. MYP is a non-profit located at SE 122nd Plaza that works with under-served and incarcerated youth in the Portland area. Recent programs include an art and dance workshop for high school students, a breakdancing program at Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center and a podcast project in collaboration with KBOO community radio.

Board members are expected to participate in monthly board meetings and help fundraise for the organization. Board members fundraise in many different ways, such as hosting small concerts or setting up an online auction. One board member is making a compilation album with local hip-hop artists and youth that will be sold online and at Morpheus events.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about youth and committed to our vision, while being energetic about raising money and developing our organization. Experience in those two areas is a plus.

This is an opportunity to become more involved in the lives of youth in your community. By serving on the board, you are helping to shape the direction and impact of an organization. You can contact Morpheus’ Executive Director, Carlos Chavez, to learn more:

New Birth Anniversary Jam by Carlos Chavez

Last week we had a blast at Starday Tavern with The Bottom Shelf Band, Gepetto, Dusty Fox, Yung Poe and DJ Figs. Those generous folks - along with LUSH Cosmetics - helped us to raise over $500. I want to give them and everyone who came out a big THANK YOU from MYP!

Next on the MYP agenda is the New Birth Crew 7th Anniversary Jam, courtesy of East Portland Neighborhood Office on Saturday June 18th. This breakdance competition is going to be a hot one. Make sure you don't sleep on this on. We've got folks coming from all over to attend and participate in this highly anticipated event at IRCO on 103rd and NE Glisan.

On June 17th we'll also be hosting a bboy/bgirl workshop by world class bboy of Squishy Docious and Air Force Crew, Bboy Sa-Ewl. Workshop starts at 5pm and will be held at Fir Ridge High School on 11215 SE Market St. Portland, OR. Both events are FREE and open to the public. I hope to see you there.

MYP Hip Hop Program a Big Success!! by Carlos Chavez

MYP Hip Hop Program May 2016

MYP Hip Hop Program May 2016

Just a quick update on MYP activities. We just wrapped up our month long Hip Hop program at the MYP office. We served 29 youth in the East Portland area. They got a chance to practice and record music, breakdance, learn graffiti art muraling and  silk screening. We ate good, had fun and made new connections and friends. We look forward to the next project.

Big thanks to our instructors Alex Southworth and Kevin Le, East Portland Action Plan for the grant opportunity and our generous sponsors Fifty Licks Ice Cream, Collage Arts and Crafts and Fire on the Mountain! You're work and support are amazing!

New Video by Carlos Chavez

Recently, the experimental marketing and live event agency Henry V took some time to film MYP's activities as part of a small feature for TEDx Portland. Along with that short feature, our friends at Henry V hooked us up with a nice promotional video to add to our website. We're proud to present that to you here.

Big thanks to Chad Smith aka DJ Weather for putting this video together for us and to our friend GA$PVR for the great soundtrack! GV$PVR's track was made specifically for this video. Thank you both for your support on this.

February Update by Carlos Chavez

February Update
This month is full of exciting events and workshops! First, on Friday the 19th, MYP is sponsoring the Supportland break dance jam hosted by Portland’s own New Birth Crew. The jam will be at Fir Ridge High School from 4:30-9:00pm. The event will feature renowned break dancers from all over the Pacific Northwest; as well as DJ Woodz and DJ Fish Boogie on the ones and twos. This is a FREE event! Fir Ridge has asked attendants to wear tennis shoes to help preserve their new gym floor.

Morpheus Youth Project will be hosting a listening party on Monday the 29th. This will feature a broadcast of KBOO Community Radio’s Profiles Podcast, produced my MYP's own Carlos Chavez and Delphine, along with East Portland community members and students from MacLaren Youth Corrections. Snacks and drinks will be provided, again admission is free. After the podcast we will encourage everyone to participate in a discussion of the criminalization taking place in our communities.

Morpheus Youth Project is currently running ongoing audio production workshops at our office on Wednesdays from 3:00-6:00pm. This workshop features training in both rapping and recording with local Portland artist Gepetto. All youth (ages 15-24) are welcome to participate, admittance to the workshop is free. Contact MYP for more information and for registration details.

Lastly, Morpheus Youth Project has partnered with the Division Midway Alliance (sponsored by the East Portland Action Plan) to decorate an electrical box on Division street. This pilot project will be carried out by youth (who will be paid a stipend) that MYP is currently recruiting. This is a pilot project and will likely lead to a larger program to decorate the dozens of large electrical boxes that litter East Portland. We are still looking for good candidates! Contact MYP for more information on how to apply. Students must be from outer East Portland to qualify.

MYP Art Exhibit and Open House by Carlos Chavez

Saamir showing his work at a Hope Partnership event at MacLaren YCF

Saamir showing his work at a Hope Partnership event at MacLaren YCF

You are cordially invited to our first art exhibit at MYP headquarters. This event was inspired by a talented artist that was also a student of MYP at MacLaren Youth Corrections. While he was our student, he suggested the idea of hosting an art exhibit in Portland with art work from students at MacLaren and other locations. He wanted folks outside of the facility to have a chance to view the amazing talent that students inside of the facility had to share. And after numerous hurdles, we're excited to finally launch that idea.

This is a free event and all are welcome. We will have snacks and refreshments.

Fir Ridge High School Summer Bboy Sessions by Carlos Chavez

With the help of our friends at Fir Ridge Alternative High School, MYP is now hosting summer breakdance sessions there. These sessions are open anyone interested in breakdancing and will run through the remainder of this summer from noon to 1:30pm every Friday. We are deeply appreciative of the support of those at Fir Ridge and we look forward to  our partnership this upcoming year with additional programs like Rap / Songwriting, Poetry, Tutoring and an Entrepreneurship Course. More to come...

First Thursday In The Pearl by Carlos Chavez

Hi MYP friends and family. I want to let you know about an awesome event going down this Thursday in NW Portland's Pearl District. Our friends at the PREM Group will be hosting a fundraiser for Morpheus Youth Project from 5:30 - 9pm. There will be art work, music and drinks. This is a great opportunity to get out and have some fun, while supporting a great cause! I hope to see you there!

MYP on KBOO Community Radio by Carlos Chavez

Check out KBOO's recent radio program featuring Morpheus Youth Project on Prison Pipeline. Producer Stephanie Guy focuses on the work being done at MacLaren Youth Corrections in Carlos Chavez' Radio Journalism Class. This is an ongoing workshop that is hosted on Friday nights to youth service time there. Danny Gonzalez is interviewed on his experiences in this class and what it meant for him. He was one of the students who was involved in this class from the get go and who continued on through his time at MacLaren. He is now released and doing well for himself and MYP's Radio Journalism Group is now certifying youth in different areas of audio recording and production through its partnership with KBOO Community Radio and Hope Partnership (Janis Youth Programs).

Fall Fundraising In Full Swing by Carlos Chavez

MYP has kicked off it's Fall 2014 fundraising campaign with Mississippi Pizza and Indiegogo. We start things off at Mississippi with the Lunar Lift Off concert hosted by the one and only Mighty Misc. with DJ Weather on the ones and two, Research and Development and Bottom Shelf Band.

You don't want to miss this show!

It's going to be hot and we're going to have lots of MYP merchandise and gift packages to auction off!

We'll have another great concert following in November that will be just as awesome, so stay posted for info on that one.

In the meantime, we've kicked off our coinciding Indiegogo campaign which overlaps both concerts for those who live outside of Portland and want to show support or for those who make it to the show and didn't get enough merchandise.
